What Is Dry Cleaning, and How Long Does It Take?
That "dry clean only" label can feel like a mystery. This guide explains what dry cleaning is, how long it usually takes, and when it is worth doing.
What Is Dry Cleaning?
Dry cleaning cleans clothes with a liquid solvent instead of water. The garment is cleaned in a machine, then dried and finished. It is called "dry" because water is not the main cleaning agent. Solvents are good at lifting oily marks and suit many fabrics that could shrink or lose their shape in a wash.
What Does "Dry Clean Only" Mean?
The maker advises professional cleaning because water may damage the fabric, colour or structure. If a label says dry clean only, follow it, especially for tailored or valuable pieces.
Dry Clean or Wash at Home
Usually better dry cleaned:
Suits, blazers and tailored coats
Silk, wool, cashmere and velvet
Delicate or embellished dresses
Anything labelled dry clean only
Usually fine to wash at home:
Cotton and polyester basics
T-shirts, jeans and underwear
Items labelled machine washable
Always follow the label. If unsure, ask us.
How Long Does Dry Cleaning Take?
It depends on the garment, the shop and how busy it is. Simple items often come back sooner than heavily stained or detailed pieces. When you drop off, ask for a ready date and say if you have a deadline.
Is Same Day Dry Cleaning Possible?
Sometimes, for straightforward items and if you bring them in early. Call ahead on +44 20 7473 2846 and tell us what you have. We will be honest about what we can do. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm.
How Often Should You Dry Clean?
Too much dry cleaning can wear fabric. As a rough guide:
Suits and blazers: when marked, or after several wears, with airing in between
Delicate tops and dresses: after wearing if marked or perspiration is present
Coats and knitwear: at the end of the season before storage
